Join us in Tacoma for WALPA’s 36th annual conference October 4-6!

WALPA invites you to our 36th annual conference on the University of Washington-Tacoma campus. This year’s theme, Fish and Beyond in Our Lakes, was chosen to highlight effects of climate change, lake pollution, and lake management strategies on fisheries in Pacific Northwest lakes.

Our plenary speaker will be Jim Gawel, Ph.D., from the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington-Tacoma. Jim will present on “Community-Engaged Research in Lakes with Undergraduates: Bridging Basic Science, Education, and Community Needs”.

The conference will open with an invasive species workshop on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 4), which is included with your registration.

On Thursday, breakfast and lunch will be provided with gluten-free and vegetarian options. Then join us Thursday night for drinks and hors d’oeuvres while we auction prizes to fund our student scholarships! One of our hot ticket auction items this year is the YSI ProSolo ODO/T Kit, graciously donated from Xylem, which you can win for your agency or organization.

We’ll conclude on Friday, October 6, with morning sessions and an early career panel (see related story).

Session topics may include, but are not limited to:

    • Fisheries ecology and management
    • Salmon habitat in big lakes
    • Contaminants of emerging concern
    • Adaptive management
    • Climate change
    • Nutrient management
    • Harmful algal blooms (HAB’s)
    • Invasive aquatic species
    • Volunteer monitoring/citizen science
    • Student research

A more detailed agenda will be available soon on the conference webpage.
